Seminar on pipe jacking technology for sewer pipeline construction

In the afternoon of May 12th, Binh Duong Water Supply Sewerage Environment Co., Ltd (BIWASE) held a seminar on pipe jacking technology for sewer pipeline construction. This technology comes from Japan and used for under ground pipeline construction. Pipe jacking is a technique used for installing pipes under the ground using a tunnel boring machine and hydraulic jacks located inside a jacking pit. A shield is inserted into the ground through a drive shaft or reception point and cuts a bore. As the shield moves forward, excavating the earth in its path, sections of pipe are jacked into place directly behind it using powerful hydraulic jacks. Advantages of pipe jacking technology are reduction of construction period, suitable with urban area, limitation of traffic impacts and environmental pollution caused by open- excavating method which is being applied.

Mr.Le Van Gon – Deputy General Director of BIWASE- said that this technology is firstly applied in Nguyen Duc Thuan street, Hiep Thanh ward, Thu Dau Mot city, Binh Duong province. This uses budget funded by JICA (Japan), under the Southern Binh Duong province water environment improvement project, phase 1. this work consists of 500 meters in length with diameter of 300mm. Contractor only make 7 wells with diameter from 2 to 3 meters, 6-8 meters in depth for each, in which 3 wells are used for jacking and connecting pipe, which did not require to excavate 500 meters of pipe.

At the seminar, delegates listened to the contractor Yasuda Engineering (from Japan)- the one who carried out pipe jacking in Binh Duong – to present procedure, implementing method as well as Japanese pipe jacking manuafacturing technology. Delegates also visited a site of pipe jacking in Nguyen Duc Thuan street prior to attending the seminar.
