Waste Collection Local Self-establishment Team (WCLST’s) in Hiep An shares about encouragement of waste classification at source in the community

Ms. Lam Thi Thu Ha, a citizen of KP3, Hiep An ward, said: “It is easy to talk than done because I used to combine my trash together in a bag. Moreover, I have to regularly remind my family members, especially young children, to know how to distinguish the types of garbage, otherwise they just mix them all together. It can be said that after three months of implementation, we are more aware about joining hand to environmental protection”.

Since the end of 2018, when being chosen by the city as a pioneer, People's Committee of Hiep An Ward held a meeting to announce and set up environmental self-management teams for monitor and supervision. Then, training will be held. The next step is to distribute nylon bags, trash bins for worker inns. To collaborate with the waste collection local self-establishment teams (WCLSTs) to increase collection schedule and transportation vehicles. All works must be synchronized. Mr. Nguyen Van Duc, Chairman of Hiep An Ward People's Committee, said: “Currently 100% of households in the area have been trained and classified garbage. For the main roads, it is required to collect garbage in the early morning and in the evening for the small alleys. This allows people, especially workers, to have time to take garbage to the street on time. Regarding the schedule of garbage collection, it is published to each house and placed at each alley. It is a little difficult because there are many workers in the areas who don’t participate in training and dispose their waste inappropriate time. It is difficult for the WCLSTs to do their collection task. This in turn affects to others. The Ward People's Committee has requested the landlords to proactively approach and do better communication in the near future”.

At the end of 2019, completion of pioneer model, whether this program will continue to be implemented without free plastic bags support is questioned? Mr. Nguyen Van Duc said: “This is taken into account. Afterward, people kept sorting out garbage and put it in any bag. When taking garbage to street, just need to mark it with a yellow and blue cord. Consequently, collectors can easily notice blue wire is for easy decompose waste, in contrast, the yellow wire is a difficult decompose waste. In fact, the current value of free nylon bags does not cost much. Its main job is to promote people’s awareness.

In order for people to well implement the program such as on time disposal and on the right route, Hiep An Ward People's Committee also apply camera system on many routes for monitoring, propagate and penalty. Since then, waste classification at source is becoming the people’s daily good manner.
